How to Finish and Frame a Diamond Painting

You've Finished Your Diamond Painting — Now What?

Completing a diamond painting is such a satisfying moment. But once the last drill is placed, there are a few important steps between "done" and "displayed" that will make all the difference to how your finished piece looks.

Here's a complete guide to finishing and framing your diamond painting so it looks its absolute best.

Step 1: Seal Your Canvas (Optional but Recommended)

Sealing your finished canvas protects the drills from dust, moisture, and accidental knocks. It also helps keep every drill firmly in place for years to come.

To seal your diamond painting:

1. Make sure all drills are pressed down firmly and evenly — use a roller or a flat book to go over the whole canvas.
2. Apply a diamond painting sealer (available from craft shops) using a soft brush or sponge, working in thin, even layers.
3. Allow to dry fully between coats. Two to three coats is usually enough.
4. Let the final coat cure for at least 24 hours before framing.

If you prefer a no-seal finish, that's absolutely fine — just make sure your drills are well pressed and handle the canvas carefully when framing.

Step 2: Flatten Your Canvas (If Needed)

Here's some good news — by the time you've placed and pressed down all your drills, your canvas will almost certainly be flat already. The weight and pressure of the drills naturally flatten the canvas as you work, so most finished diamond paintings need little to no flattening at all.

If you do have a stubborn wrinkle or curl in a corner, it's easy to fix. Place your canvas face-down on a clean, flat surface, cover it with a thin cloth, and press gently with a warm (not hot) iron. Keep the iron moving and work in short bursts — the canvas should respond quickly. Alternatively, place it between two flat boards with some weight on top overnight.

Step 3: Choose Your Framing Method

There are several popular ways to display a finished diamond painting:

Option 1: A Standard Photo Frame

The simplest option — just find a frame that matches your canvas size. Remove the glass (drills can be crushed by glass pressing down on them) and mount your canvas on the backing board. Secure the edges with tape or staples on the back.

Option 2: A Canvas Stretcher Frame

For a more professional finish, stretch your canvas over a wooden stretcher frame (like those used for oil paintings). Pull the canvas taut and staple it to the back of the frame. This gives a clean, gallery-style look with no border needed.

Option 3: A Floating Frame

Floating frames are designed to display the canvas with a small gap between the artwork and the frame edge, giving a modern, elevated look. They're a popular choice for diamond paintings as they show off the full canvas without any overlap.

Option 4: Roll and Store

Not ready to frame yet? Roll your finished canvas loosely (drills facing out) around a cardboard tube and store it in a cool, dry place until you're ready.

Step 4: Hang and Enjoy!

Once framed, find the perfect spot to display your work — somewhere you'll see it every day. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the canvas over time, and damp areas like bathrooms.
