Your First Diamond Painting: What Nobody Tells You
Diamond painting is one of the most satisfying crafts you can pick up — but like any hobby, there's a learning curve. The good news? A few simple tips can save you hours of frustration and help you get stunning results from your very first canvas.
Here are our favourite diamond painting tips and tricks for beginners, gathered from real experience in the craft.
1. Don't Peel Off All the Release Paper at Once
This is the number one mistake beginners make. The adhesive on your canvas is sensitive — expose it to air, dust, or pet hair for too long and it loses its stickiness.
Instead, peel back a small section at a time — just enough to work on comfortably. Re-cover completed sections with your release paper as you go. Your canvas will stay sticky and clean throughout the whole project.
2. Sort Your Drills Before You Start
Rummaging through a bag of mixed drills mid-project is a time-killer. Before you begin, sort your drills by colour into separate containers or bags and label them with their DMC code. You'll thank yourself later.
A good drill tray makes this even easier — just pour in a colour, give it a shake, and the drills naturally face symbol-side up, ready to pick up.
3. Work in Sections, Not Rows
It's tempting to work across the canvas row by row, but most experienced diamond painters recommend working in colour blocks instead. Pick one colour, complete all of that colour in a section, then move on. It's faster, more satisfying, and reduces the chance of placing the wrong drill.
4. Use a Multi-Placer for Large Colour Blocks
If you have a big area of one colour to fill, a multi-placer pen (which picks up 3, 6, or 9 drills at once) will dramatically speed up your work. Switch back to a single-tip pen for detailed areas and edges.
5. Press Your Drills Down Firmly
Once you've placed a section, use a roller or a flat object (even a book works) to press the drills down firmly and evenly. This helps them bond better with the adhesive and gives your finished canvas a neater, more uniform look.
6. Keep Your Workspace Clean
Drills are tiny and love to escape. Work on a flat, clean surface and consider placing a tray or cloth around your canvas to catch any runaways. Good lighting also helps — you'll spot misplaced drills and colour differences much more easily.
7. Store Your Canvas Properly Between Sessions
If you're mid-project and need to take a break, always re-cover your canvas with release paper before rolling or folding it away. This protects the adhesive and keeps your drills in place.

8. Don't Rush — That's the Whole Point
